Overhead pivot irrigation run by a large diesel pump used to water during the off season. We have lots of calcium in our water, hey, that makes us fortified! During harvest we use the drip irrigation to ensure our blueberries are not covered in, healthy but not so pretty, calcium.
This large pump is only used when the plants need water. It is turned on by hand. You will never drive by and see our irrigation running mindlessly in the rain. Water, fertilizer and diesel are all resources we protect. Water, fertilizer and diesel represent major costs for farms but as producers we also feel strongly about conservation.
Before Hurricane Irma, we were in a drought. Grass was not growing well and watering holes were disappearing (seen above).
Post Irma, we had lost large, beloved trees, but the grass is lush, and the watering holes are not in jeopardy.
The good and bad hold hands again!
In love with the families blueberry farm and cow calf operation, Cindy loves being an observer of how well their two boys grow on the farm, getting to know people who are inspired by the blueberry operation and life, well that is amazing...happy to share!
